Why You Wont See the “Best Man Dressed as the Bride” Prank Here

Lately, there has been a trend circulating the internet where the best man dresses up as the bride to prank the groom during the first look. I will paint the picture for you. The groom is set in place, thinking he is about to see his bride all done up in her hair, makeup, and dress, which she spent so much time looking for. He can hear excitement happening behind him. His heart begins to race, and he’s filled with emotion. A tap on the shoulder signals him to turn around. When he does, his best man, best friend, or male family member is standing there in a bridal dress, and everyone bursts into laughter. The shock of seeing this person in a dress lightens the mood, and once it’s posted on social media or YouTube, it goes viral.

Now let’s unpack that for a minute. Why is this prank funny? Is it because the groom did not expect to see his best man in a dress? Would it be funny if anyone from the wedding party (male or female) did it too?

Imagine if one of the people watching this prank unfold was struggling with their identity. The scenario I described takes place, and we get to the part where everyone laughs. And imagine you are the person struggling with your identity or how you like to express yourself. Is everyone laughing because it’s a man in a dress? Is there something wrong with men wanting to sometimes wear dresses or anything considered “feminine” for that matter? As these thoughts start rushing your head, you begin to wonder if how you express yourself is bad or something to laugh at. Suddenly you pick up on these social cues and start to suppress these feelings and create a narrative that you begin to believe. This is something that many queer people instinctively just do. And the truth is it happens mostly with children.

Regardless of the age of those around to see this prank happen in person or later on via the internet, this prank is harmful to the LGBTQ+ community. It is not a prank we condone or will ever be a part of at Events by Frank. But don’t get us wrong, we love a good laugh as much as the next person. So if you really want to pull off some kind of prank, let’s develop something that won’t be insensitive to other people, especially those in the LGBTQ+ community.
